Amblyopia or ‘Lazy eye’ is a vision-related disorder that affects about 4 percent of children globally. If left untreated, it may lead to permanent visual impairment. To tackle this common cause of vision impairment and blindness, popular eye care chain, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospitals Group utilizing Bynocs Software, a new groundbreaking innovation which provides an effective treatment for Amblyopia.

“Amblyopia is an eye problem leading to lifelong visual impairment. It happens when there is reduced vision in one eye caused by abnormal visual development early in life. Refractive error is one of the common causes of amblyopia.  Due to lack of awareness in parents about refractive errors in children it is often identified late. As a child grows older, it gets more difficult to repair the damage of Amblyopia,” said Dr. Chandra Sekhar Sahoo, Senior Consultant and Pediatric Ophthalmologist at Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospitals Bhubaneswar.

“The Bynocs Software comes as a cost effective, innovative and efficient approach to the treatment of Amblyopia in children. With Bynocs Software, the treatment schedule is for a maximum of 20 to 30 sessions over a period of 4 to 6 weeks; and patients have experienced 80-90 per cent improvement in their vision. The price difference between the traditional treatment and this treatment is also not too much,” he added.

In the traditional method, one eye is stimulated by patching or the penalization of the other eye, but with Bynocs Software the process is completely different. Both eyes are stimulated at the same time with different contrast enhanced images. This is referred to as Dichoptic stimulation of the eyes. In certain cases, the Bynocs software can also be used for treatment of Amblyopia in adults and has shown significant improvement in the condition of patients.

The Bynocs software effectively applies the dichoptic principle of therapy in the treatment of Amblyopia. The software stimulates both eyes at the same time but with different contrast enhanced images. There are varieties of games and eye exercises that are used in the software for the treatment of Amblyopia. The technology can be used in the treatment of several other eye complications like computer vision syndrome, accommodative problems, strabismus and other binocular vision problems.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 19 million children less than 15 years of age are visually impaired. Of these, 12 million are impaired due to uncorrected refractive errors and amblyopia. Also, recent evidence suggests that Amblyopia to be the leading cause of vision impairment globally, with a reported prevalence of 1.44 percent. Data further predicts a rising burden of amblyopia from about 99.2 million in 2019 to 175.2 million by 2030 and 221.9 million by 2040.
